High School Placement and Support

High School Placement
KIPP Through College plays a vital role in supporting our alumni’s transition from KIPP NYC middle school to high school, and in helping them develop, during the critical high school years, the character and academic skills required for success in college and beyond.

Before the launch of KIPP NYC College Prep High School in 2009, KTC was responsible for ensuring that every KIPP NYC eighth grader was placed in an external high school program that best served his or her continuing educational needs and goals.  Since our first class matriculated to high school in 1999, KIPP NYC alumni have enrolled at some of the finest schools in the nation, including:

A Better Chance - Darien
All Hallows High School
Bronx Leadership Academy
Cardinal Spellman High School
Cathedral High School
Cristo Rey New York High School
 Deerfield Academy
The Fessenden School
Elisabeth Irwin High School
Fordham Preparatory School
Frederick Douglass Academy
Groton School
 Horace Mann School
La Salle Academy
Loomis Chaffee

Milton Academy
Milton Hershey School
Mother Cabrini High School
Academy of Mount St. Ursula
Mount St. Michael Academy
Nightingale-Bamford School
Notre Dame High School
Oldfields School
Riverdale Country School
St. Jean Baptiste High School
Monsignor Scanlan High School

The Spence School

Xavier High School

As a result of KIPP NYC alumni’s track record of academic achievement, leadership, and character development, KTC developed strong relationships with public, private, and parochial schools in New York City, as well as boarding schools and A Better Chance (ABC) community school programs throughout the East Coast. Historically, KTC has helped KIPP NYC 7th and 8th graders and their parents learn about and pursue a broad range of college-preparatory high school options.

The opening of our KIPP NYC College Prep High School in the summer of 2009 marked a turning point for KIPP NYC.  We now offer eighth grade students and their families the opportunity to continue their academic preparation and character development in a rigorous, college-focused KIPP team-and-family environment.

High School Academic Support
When KIPP NYC alumni attend external high schools, KTC tracks and supports their academic progress and provides them with guidance, tutoring and mentoring.   KTC monitors students’ academic progress by collecting report cards and maintaining direct contact with high school teachers and counselors.  KTC advisors are responsible for building relationships with specific high schools and tracking and visiting the alumni who attend those schools.

Study Halls.  As part of KTC’s high school academic support focus, high school-aged alumni return to KIPP Academy, KIPP STAR, and KIPP AMP for afternoon study hall where they make use of Alumni Resource Centers, designated spaces for quiet study and social interaction.  During study hall hours, KTC provides one-to-one tutoring in each academic area and review classes for the Regents exams.  KTC also provides intensive PSAT preparation and one-to-one SAT tutoring for students in their junior and senior years of high school. The Alumni Resource Centers are staffed by a counselor, a grade advisor, and tutors.

Enrichment Programs.  KTC offers other enrichment programming for our local high school alumni to help them develop the character strengths and life skills they need for success and happiness in school and beyond.  After-school workshops focus on topics including study skills and time management, nutrition, fitness, effective leadership, and overcoming obstacles.
